Last year's edition of "Google Year in Search" was the first time the term "Corona" was mentioned in a Google Year in Review (Werbewoche.ch reported). The global pandemic has turned the daily lives of many upside down. In 2021, we look back on another year whose Google searches - and everything else - were shaped by Corona. But it was also a year of big events, moving headlines, inspiring personalities and exciting topics.

Which people caused a stir in Switzerland? Which topics dominated and which questions were asked by Swiss Google users? Google has compiled an overview in nine lists.

Football, Corona and Tennis shape 2021

This year, too, the pandemic with all its facets has accompanied the Swiss population. However, since the Google Year in Review does not look at the most searched-for search queries, but rather the "trending" search queries - i.e. those search terms with the highest percentage growth in search queries - and Corona already dominated the previous year, another topic secures first place this year: the 2021 European Football Championship.

Swiss football fans remember with pride the great performances of the Nati at the Euro, the penalty drama against France as well as Spain, and the brilliant performances of goalkeeper Yann Sommer. Euro 2021 is not only the trending topic par excellence, but also the most searched European Championship of all time in Google searches. In second place is the Corona pandemic. As a football-loving country, the Champions League makes it to third place in Switzerland's Google ranking. After the topic of football had taken a few breaks last year, it is thus back in full (search) force in 2021.

Google determines the trends of the year by evaluating trillions of search queries that users have made over the course of the year. The tools can never be used to identify individual users and their interests; they are based on anonymized, aggregated data that records how often certain terms were searched for over time.

All lists published here are "trending searches", i.e. the most strongly rising search terms of the year. These are terms for which the relevant searches in 2021 for a sustained phase have seen a particularly strong increase in search interest compared to the previous year. These ascending terms are then sorted in descending order according to search interest in the respective phase.
