Amazon attacks Netflix

The U.S. internet company Amazon is expanding its Prime Video streaming service to 200 countries, thereby launching a major offensive against its competitor Netflix.

So far, only customers in the U.S., Germany, Austria, the U.K. and Japan can use the online retailer's video offering. Prime customers in Belgium, France, Italy, Spain, Canada and India will be able to watch movies and series without a surcharge, Amazon announced Wednesday. In the remaining countries, customers will be able to use Amazon's video library for 2.99 euros a month for the first six months, then for 5.99 euros.

Amazon is thus positioning itself on the market for streaming services against the pioneer Netflix. Amazon Prime customers also benefit, among other things, from free and faster deliveries when they order products via Amazon. The US streaming service Netflix has been available in 190 countries since the beginning of the year and currently has around 87 million users. The company sees the recent significant increase in the number of customers above all as a success of its investments in in-house productions. Amazon also already financed a number of in-house productions. (SDA)
