Three students, a viral video of a girl drowning in flood water and 25 paradoxes of the global CO₂ markets - these are the ingredients for "The Carbon Paradox". The new novel by Renat Heuberger, founder of South Pole and myclimate, combines the suspense of a climate thriller with an in-depth analysis of the contradictions of international climate projects.

The story follows the idealistic main characters in their climate protection projects in the fictional country of Demba. In the process, they come up against the complex and often contradictory mechanisms of CO₂ certificates. These paradoxes, which Heuberger knows from his many years of experience at South Pole, are vividly portrayed in the novel. "CO₂ certificates to finance climate protection are extremely exciting because they are full of controversy. Science, politics, ideologies, cultures, business - everything collides," explains the author.

The last part of the book ventures a look into the future and presents a vision: What could efficient, fair and global climate finance look like? Heuberger wrote the book together with the American journalist Steve Zwick and Marco Hirsbrunner.

"The Carbon Paradox" will be published by Red Penguin Books on September 21. The German edition "Das Klimaschutz-Paradox" will follow in October.
