BitsaboutMe launches data fair trade in Switzerland with Europe's first online data marketplace
Internet users can now earn money with their digital data for the first time. With Europe's first online data marketplace, BitsaboutMe offers its users the opportunity to decide for themselves how their data is used by third parties.
The Bern-based start-up run by the former CEO of Ricardo.ch, Christian Kunz, is revolutionizing the previous data economy value chain between data traders and companies with this direct participation opportunity for users. Users can now create and offer their own data profiles on BitsaboutMe. In return, interested companies and organizations make offers in the form of money or services for the precisely defined use in terms of time and content. The first data deals are being offered in Switzerland by Orell Füssli, Loeb and Tesla, among others. This innovative, fair data deal gives companies an image and competitive advantage, as they receive high-quality, up-to-date data records in a way that complies with data protection regulations. A Salesforce app developed in collaboration with Ec4u Expert Consulting also enables companies to plug & play their customer relationship management system (CRM) into the data marketplace.
By providing the data marketplace for consumers and companies, BitsaboutMe is taking a decisive step towards fair and transparent data exchange that focuses on the user and their data sovereignty.
"If every citizen can view and control their own digital data at BitsaboutMe and now also earn money, they will become aware of the value of their . This increases the willingness to share data with companies under transparent conditions in return for fair compensation. From this moment on, companies will receive far higher quality and more comprehensive data profiles than previously available on the market. Companies that commit to this data fair trade will be able to realize decisive competitive advantages through greater customer trust. In short: a real win-win situation," says Kunz, summarizing the mechanism of the BitsaboutMe marketplace.
Many popular Internet services are only supposedly free for consumers. They pay with their data. Who does what with their profile and usage data usually remains hidden. BitsaboutMe, on the other hand, offers its users full transparency and a complete overview of the data linked to their personal data storage (PDS). If a user wants to earn money with all or freely selectable parts of their data profile, they can offer them to interested companies or organizations via the Personal Data Marketplace (PDM) for use for a specific purpose and for a specific period of time in return for payment. The data profiles remain inaccessible until the owner reaches an agreement with a company or organization on the terms of use (purpose, duration, remuneration).
Companies can benefit from this exchange in many different ways when implementing their digitalization strategy. The consumer data available on the marketplace can be used to improve marketing and CRM and to gain detailed insights into market and customer behavior when users share their movement profiles or shopping data anonymously, for example. BitsaboutMe helps with the formulation of data requests with a standardized framework for data deals and ensures that the data is then exchanged securely and in compliance with data protection laws.
