The British news agency Reuters has accepted the takeover bid of the Canadian information services provider Thomson worth 13 billion euros. The company will continue to be managed by the previous head of Reuters, Tom Glocer. From now on, around 49,000 employees will report to him, who will generate annual sales of around 17.5 billion euros, writes the news agency SDA in a report. Reuters alone employs 17,000 people worldwide, including 2,400 journalists, photographers and cameramen. However, it still requires the approval of the competition authorities. The financial data and news business for investors and the media will continue to operate under the Reuters name. The remaining units will operate under the name Thomson Reuters Professional. While Reuters is primarily active in the UK and Central Europe, Thomson has a strong presence in the US market. The two companies expect the merger to result in savings of around CHF 370 million within three years. Thomson is paying for the takeover partly in cash and partly with its own shares. The new company Thomson-Reuters, which is listed on the Toronto and London stock exchanges, is expected to have a 34 percent share in business information and financial market data.
