Earth Rising
The new Sony Bravia commercial by DDB Berlin features stunning visuals and wonderful music—but leaves many questions unanswered.

Sony presents the Bravia OLED A1 TV, its first OLED TV in ten years. It has been available in stores since May, costs just under 6,000 francs in the larger 65″ version and not only offers a picture that justifies the price, but also according to PC Tip also one of the best built-in TV speakers ever.
So much pleasure for the senses needs to be advertised accordingly. DDB Berlin is responsible for the Europe-wide campaign and is launching the "Earth rising" commercial, which will also be shown on Swiss television from June 1 to 5.
The film relies on the strengths of the advertised television: black levels, contrasts, true-to-life colors. And with the soundtrack by Robot Koch & Savannah Jo Lack ("Heart as a River" ft. Delhia de France), it lands a precision landing worth listening to.

The question remains as to whether the viewer should understand the story or whether the storytelling is deliberately left to their imagination. A man drives through a desert with his son in an off-road buggy. They get off at a kind of cliff. A couple reach the same place on foot. They watch the rising earth in amazement - displayed on a gigantic wall of Sony screens. So much for the facts.
Are the people on earth? In the present? Is the rising earth a (not entirely cheap) staging by the father for the son? Or is the scene real and the screen reference just a hint that you can also discover new things with Sony? Do the protagonists know each other? What's with the footprint of a spacesuit?
With so much ambiguity, it's easy to fall back on the press release that Sony sent out on Monday via a Zurich PR agency. "The film shows people crossing a desert on a starry night. In the process, they witness an uncanny phenomenon: the rising earth. The final sequence ends with the claim Experience a whole new world."
Oh, so that's settled. And anyway, maybe you don't always need to know everything. I like the pictures as they are. (hae)
