Last but not least: It still exists, the successful tabloid newspaper

A slump in advertising, a crisis, job cuts? Never heard of them! That’s the message coming from the German tabloid *Bild*. The Springer Group’s flagship publication is doing better than it has in a long time.

Last year, the paper achieved the highest profit in its history. This year, the result could be repeated. The editorial team has 700 editors and around 100 online editors. "We have more advertisements than ever before," Bild spokesperson Tobias Fröhlich told Sonntag newspaper. Aldi, Lidl and Media-Markt are "filling up the paper", one editor is quoted as saying. Blick, Ringier's former cash cow, can only dream of that in this country. So what is the Springer publishing house's secret recipe? On the one hand, the group has ensured that the newspaper has no competition on the market from free newspapers. On the other hand, Bild Zeitung has always remained true to its journalistic course. Readers always know what to expect from "their" newspaper: sex-and-crime stories, reporting from a conservative-liberal economic perspective. Local news is not neglected either. Every now and then a political story makes it onto the front page. Although one or two readers jump ship - the average circulation is 100,000 copies lower - this strategy has enabled the paper to become the most quoted newspaper in Germany.
