Tamedia dominates the reader market in Western Switzerland
Tamedia can easily weather Ringier's acquisition of Le Temps. With a current market share of 76.8 percent, the publishing house remains the undisputed leader in the daily and Sunday press in French-speaking Switzerland.
Tamedia publishes the newspapers Le Matin, Le Matin Dimanche, 24 heures and Tribune de Genève, as well as the commuter newspaper 20 minutes. Ringier has not been present on the market for daily and Sunday newspapers in French-speaking Switzerland, with the exception of its stake in Le Temps. In second place, according to Media Trend Journal (MTJ), is the ESH Médias group, a subsidiary of the French Hersant group, which holds 10.1 percent of the readership. It owns the newspapers L'Impartial, L'Express and Le Nouvelliste.
The rest of the market is shared by other publishers. The overall market including magazines is also dominated by Tamedia, with a 30.9 percent share of contacts. For Migros and Coop, MTJ calculated a market share of 21.6 percent on the basis of Wemf's readership figures. Ringier (L'Illustré, L'Hebdo) comes in at 11.7 percent. (SDA)
