Last but not least: Off to the winter wonderland
This winter, for the first time in Appenzell, a snow-covered forest trail illuminated with lanterns leads almost to the end of the world. Appenzellerland Tourismus AL has created the winter wonderland trail.
The winter hiking trail is of course easy to walk on. It starts near the alpine cheese dairy at Hof Weissbad and is illuminated until 8:30 pm. The aim is to show guests how beautiful a winter hiking trail illuminated only by stars can be, according to a press release from Appenzellerland Tourismus. "The new offers should deliberately stand out from the often hectic ski circus of other destinations," says Guido Buob, Managing Director of Appenzellerland Tourism.
The aim is to show guests, not without pride, that there are still places in Appenzellerland that are not yet "polluted" by artificial light, the press release continues. This idea is also entirely in line with the new strategy, which aims to show guests "the natural and genuine". In the spirit of this "real nature", school classes from Schwende have made class stars for the Advent season, which will be hung along the path. A nativity scene with wooden figures will also be set up.

And: after the long walk to the end of the world (800 meters), a forest fondue over an open fire awaits registered groups. More "real nature" combined with comfort and artificiality is also easy to find outside Appenzellerland. In Germany, for example, there is an igloo village right next to the highest mountain, the Zugspitze. Guests can either stay in a standard igloo without any frills or in the romantic igloo version with candlelight and snow sculptures. There is also a whirlpool to warm up in:
