Federal Office of Culture awards "Federal Design Prize
This year, the Federal Office of Culture is honoring internationally renowned Swiss designers with the «Grand Prix Design.» Their work, along with that of the winners of the «Federal Design Prize 2012,» will be showcased in an exhibition.
It will be held under the title "Design Awards of the Swiss Confederation 2012" at the Museum Bellerive in Zurich. The vernissage and award ceremony are on October 25, 2012, at 7:30 pm. The three prizes will be presented by Federal Councillor Alain Berset. They will go to the product designer and teacher Franco Clivio, to Gilles Gavillet and David Rust from the graphic design office Gavillet&Rust and to the graphic designer, advertiser and typographer Karl Gerstner.
From 288 submitted dossiers, the Federal Office of Culture awards 20 works and projects this year. The collaborative or individual works are by 26 designers from the fields of graphic design (7), fashion design (4), photography (4), products and objects (3) and communication (2). The prizes consist of a choice of a monetary contribution of 25,000 Swiss francs, studio residencies in renowned offices or free studio residencies in New York. The form of the prize is determined by the prize winners.
With the "Grand Prix Design", the Federal Office of Culture annually honors designers or designated design offices that make a significant contribution to the reputation of Swiss design on a national and international level, according to a statement from the Federal Office of Culture. By launching the award, the Federal Office of Culture rounds out a package of measures that actively promotes, supports and honors the Swiss design scene. This year, the Federal Design Commission selected three designers for the "Grand Prix Design". They will receive prize money of 40,000 Swiss francs each.

Product designer and teacher Franco Clivio is one of the most important Swiss designers and knowledge brokers, according to the Federal Office of Culture. He is being honored for his work and for his commitment as a designer and teacher. Gilles Gavillet and David Rust have been active in editorial design and typography for years. They are among the most important Swiss exponents of contemporary type design. The graphic designer, advertiser and typographer Karl Gerstner is one of the most important representatives of modern Swiss commercial graphics. He is being honored for his pioneering role in Swiss graphic design and the associated impact far beyond the country's borders.
