ZHdK: Design symposium on magazines on the tablet

Last Monday, the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) kicked off its semester-long focus on «The Future of Magazines on the Tablet» with a design symposium. The one-day symposium explored the iPad and similar devices and their relevance to the magazine medium.

The symposium on March 21, 2011 gathered speakers from Great Britain, Spain, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. There was agreement that only the highest quality in multimedia storytelling will bring the desired success with the reader/user/viewer and that the basic form of tablet usability, the tablet "metaphor," has not yet been found, but that all publishers are still experimenting, summarized the organizers. During the symposium, Gruner & Jahr Publishing Managing Director Axel Wüstmann gave a presentation on the development of Stern magazine's ePaper strategy. These days, the publishing house is also launching a project together with the ZHdK. For four weeks, more than 100 design students, supervised by eight lecturers, will develop ideas and concepts around the media genre "women's magazine" in close dialog with the Hamburg publishing giant.

The presentations of the symposium are online retrievable.
