TV commercials endanger Italian children

Television Italy's TV advertising poses a threat to children's natural eating habits. This is the conclusion of a study conducted by La Sapienza University in Rome, which examined the programs of the state TV station RAI and three channels of the Mediaset Group for two weeks in March 2004. The Italian channels showed twice as much food advertising as US channels, the scientists concluded. 40 percent of all TV commercials were about food, with a child playing the leading role in every third commercial. Psychologist Maria D'Alessio believes that this distorts children's natural relationship with food.
