Pulitzer Prize: Online publication honored for the first time
This year, the Pulitzer Prize went to an online publication for the first time: the news organization Pro Publica was honored for investigative journalism. The Washington Post won a total of four prizes. The New York Times received three.
The article, which received the award for investigative journalism, was written by Sheri Fink about the work in a New Orleans hospital after Hurricane Katrina. It was published in collaboration with The New York Times Magazine.
With four awards, the Washington Post received the most honors this year. It came out on top with its international reporting, features, commentaries and reviews. The New York Times, which won five awards in 2009, had to settle for three. The sensational National Enquirer came away empty-handed. It had entered the race with revelatory stories about an affair involving presidential candidate John Edwards.
The highest Pulitzer Prize for outstanding "public service" was awarded to The Herald Courier of Bristol newspaper in the US state of Virginia. It had uncovered shenanigans involving royalties for gas deposits on private land.
