evoq Designs New Wayfinding System for Grindelwald Tourism
In collaboration with Grindelwald Tourism, evoq has developed an innovative pedestrian wayfinding system that guides visitor flows while also telling the story of the mountain village. The eleven newly installed information pillars combine traditional craftsmanship with digital innovation.

Grindelwald is one of Switzerland’s most successful tourist destinations. The thousands of visitors who come to the mountain village every day pose logistical challenges for the destination. To better manage visitor flows while also conveying the village’s identity, evoq collaborated with Grindelwald Tourism to conceive and design a new pedestrian wayfinding system.
At the heart of the new wayfinding system are eleven distinctive steles that lead visitors through the village. Each stele features a detailed map of the village that serves as a gateway to Grindelwald’s interactive experience map. This map can be accessed via a QR code and brings together all tourist offerings on a single platform.

The system is complemented by seating areas, a large information board at the train station, and eye-catching red directional signs. These supplement the existing signage and guide tourists directly to the most important points in the village. The design concept reflects the interplay between the mountain landscape and the village, using the Jungfrau Region’s brand colors. Traditional wooden elements with carved details pay homage to the Bernese Oberland’s heritage of craftsmanship.
Each of the installed steles also tells a «Grindelwald story» from the resort’s rich history—from the first ascent of the Eiger North Face to the construction of the Jungfrau Railway. The selection of topics, texts, and stories was researched, curated, and edited by Grindelwald Tourism.

«Our wayfinding system helps guests connect with Grindelwald’s culture and identity, thereby reflecting what makes our destination so special,» explains Bruno Hauswirth, Resort Director at Grindelwald Tourism.
