Swiss: skeptical about cryptocurrencies

A new study by Marketagent shows that Swiss people would invest just under 11 percent of a hypothetical million-franc investment in cryptocurrencies. While the younger generation is more open to the idea, concerns about security and stability still predominate overall.

Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies polarize the Swiss population: while a good third (35.3%) have a positive attitude towards digital currencies, more than a quarter (27.1%) are critical of them. These are the findings of the first crypto barometer conducted by market research institute Marketagent.

The Swiss are particularly cautious when it comes to specific investments: out of a hypothetical budget of one million francs, they would only invest an average of 106,000 francs in cryptocurrencies. By comparison, they would invest 402,000 francs in real estate and 221,000 francs in shares.

Generation Z more open to cryptos

There are clear differences between the generations: While 73.1% of Generation Z can imagine investing in cryptocurrencies, only 27.8% of baby boomers can. There is also a clear divide between the sexes - 70.9% of men, but only 51.9% of women are willing to invest.

"In Switzerland, there is a remarkable openness towards cryptocurrencies: More than six out of ten can imagine making an investment. At the same time, awareness of risks such as price fluctuations and security problems remains high - cryptos therefore polarize between hope for returns and concern about stability," analyses Roland Zeindler, Managing Director of Marketagent Switzerland.

Lack of knowledge as a hurdle

A lack of expertise emerges as the biggest challenge: two thirds (66.7%) of respondents rate their knowledge of cryptocurrencies as fairly or very poor. Bitcoin remains the best-known cryptocurrency with a level of awareness of 87.9%, followed by Ethereum (48.8%) and Dogecoin (24.9%).

For the representative study, 484 Swiss people between the ages of 18 and 69 were surveyed in the first half of 2025.
