The biodiversity classroom on tour

The creative agency mjm.cc has developed mobile learning spaces for environmental education and biodiversity in collaboration with and on behalf of the Hilti Foundation.

With the "supergut Labs", biodiversity is moving directly into the schoolyard. The educational project launched by the Hilti Foundation sensitizes children and young people to nature and the environment in a playful way - not in the classroom, but in the middle of the countryside. The creative agency mjm.cc was on board right from the start: the concept, design and implementation of the LABS were realized together with the Hilti Foundation.

"supergut" is an initiative to promote biodiversity in Liechtenstein. It was launched in 2023 by the Hilti Foundation, a charitable foundation that is also involved in other areas of social engagement.

Container becomes an outdoor classroom

The supergut Labs consist of two mobile wooden containers that are used as flexible learning spaces on school grounds or in public areas. They make natural knowledge not only accessible, but also directly tangible. Instead of teaching theory in the classroom, the LABS promote research-based, exploratory learning outdoors: pupils observe animals and plants, analyze meadows as habitats and research water ecosystems.

"The curriculum-compliant content was developed together with a committed and locally anchored committee of experts and is geared towards concrete, real-life issues. The aim is to integrate biodiversity into everyday school life and at the same time create space for social use, for example as a meeting place or event module," explains project manager Flurina Seger.

Design with attitude

mjm.cc accompanied the development of the labs from the very first idea. At the heart of the collaboration with the Hilti Foundation was the question: How must environmental education be designed today so that it inspires, moves and has a long-term effect?

The agency developed a clear design line for the mobile units, defined the visual appearance and supported the conceptual development of the learning modules.

"Our task as an agency was to make a vision tangible. We wanted to design a learning experience that would have an impact far beyond the schoolyard," says Martin J. Matt, CEO of mjm.cc.

A project with charisma

The pilot phase will start in the fall with school classes in Planken, Mauren and at the Liechtenstein grammar school. It is already clear that the supergut Labs are creating new learning spaces for pressing issues. They show how educational and environmental innovation can go hand in hand.
