The positive trend in circulation growth for e-papers continued in the third quarter of 2024: both sales and subscription figures for daily and weekly newspapers as well as general interest and specialist magazines increased compared to the previous quarter and the previous year, according to the new figures from the Informationsgemeinschaft zur Feststellung der Verbreitung von Werbeträgern (IVW).
Paid content grows, printed content decreases
The Paid Content segment, with 61 active offers, also recorded a consistently positive trend in sales of average daily usage rights: Compared to August 2024, the value increased by 1.35% in September.
Circulation development in the print sector is declining for all genres in Q3 2024, with only weekly newspapers bucking the trend with a slight increase in sales compared to the previous year. The number of in-flight copies is growing for daily newspapers as well as general-interest and trade magazines, while the trend for weekly newspapers is slightly negative. "Our figures speak a clear language: people in Germany still appreciate journalistic publications, but use them less in print than digitally," says IVW Managing Director Kai Kuhlmann.
