Social media app Naoo aims to revolutionize the social media market

Naoo, a social network based in Switzerland, aims to restore value and significance to social platforms. To achieve this, it’s taking a different approach—because Naoo offers cashback for content.

Social media apps such as Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and Facebook have become an integral part of everyday life. The owner-financed company Naoo now wants to show that the social media market is not yet saturated. The app wants to motivate users to post high-quality content and exchange ideas with like-minded people - and reward them for doing so with a cashback function, according to a statement.

Score with authenticity

With Naoo, users can share images, videos, and longer captions to share their world with followers. The basics are similar to other popular social media apps. The look is also reminiscent of other apps where users can scroll endlessly. Short surveys from everyday life, in which users are asked about their favorite food or sports habits, for example, should help the algorithm to play out content according to interests and preferences. However, Naoo also wants to encourage users to show their true selves: there is no filter function. In this way, the operators want to ensure that what is posted is as authentic as possible.

Cashback for content

However, the operators consider the cashback function to be the biggest innovation. Content that is well received is rewarded with Naoo points, which can then be converted into benefits. Currently, the points can be exchanged for cash, for example. In the future, more options are planned for which the points can be redeemed.

It also offers offline benefits in the form of a loyalty function. In this way, the app aims to strengthen local retail and "encourage users to participate more in the real world," according to the statement. This should give local stores, restaurants and hotels the opportunity to attract users with offers. They show a QR code on the app and are rewarded with benefits, discounts and Naoo points.

And data protection?

In terms of data protection, the company assures that the collected data will not be passed on to third parties and will be treated sensitively. But where does the money for the points come from if no data is sold? "Instead of paying six-figure sums to Google and Facebook for advertising, we prefer to give this money to the community," explains Marc Pittner, General Manager of Naoo. "That means that yes, we pay the compensation for the points out of our own pockets. We don't sell the data" In addition, he says, Naoo - compared to other foreign apps - is subject to Swiss and European law, which has stricter regulations when it comes to data security.
