The PR Factory develops card security prevention campaign

Card fraud is one of the most common types of fraud in Switzerland. The PR Factory, on behalf of the police, developed the nationwide «Card Security» campaign, which raises awareness about the risks associated with using debit and credit cards.

With "Card Security" informs the police about the potential dangers of card misuse and provides the public with the most important rules of conduct. The campaign will be used throughout Switzerland over the next three months. The focus will be on the most important prevention measures. At the same time, the campaign will also use testimonials to raise awareness.

Flexible implementation required

The "Card Security" campaign includes many different measures such as video messages for social media, posters, giveaways, brochures and online advertising. In addition, there are ATMs where passers-by are shown how quickly card misuse can occur. "Different means of communication will be used depending on the police force," says Andrea Miolo-Eberhard, agency manager at The PR Factory. "We had to make the campaign as flexible as possible so that each corps can use what can be used best on site."

Targeting older people

Card misuse can happen to anyone. And the responsibility practically always lies with the cardholder. The simplest rules of conduct, such as covering the PIN, not writing it down or not being distracted at ATMs, are usually simply ignored. This is also the biggest challenge in prevention work. "Basically, it's about anchoring in people's minds what everyone already knows but nobody does," says Miolo-Eberhard.

Another challenge is that older people in particular are often victims of card fraud. This is despite the fact that they have been using debit and credit cards for decades and nothing has ever happened to them. The only thing that often helps here is personal education from experts or examples from those affected. This is precisely why it is important that the campaign is very broadly supported both online and via social media as well as with print products and giveaways.

The campaign was launched at the beginning of June 2020 and will run throughout Switzerland until the end of the summer.
