iPhone 8, Mall of Switzerland and Roger Federer moved Switzerland in 2017
Google takes the pulse of the past year and publishes the country's most popular search terms in its «Google Year in Search 2017» report.
The launch of the new iPhone was the topic that most captured the attention of the Swiss. The term “iPhone 8” saw the biggest increase in search queries and ranks first. This year’s Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon, which Roger Federer won for the eighth time, sparked a great deal of search interest and ranks second among the most popular search terms. In third place is the iPhone X, which hit stores in November.
The Mall of Switzerland, fidget spinners, and Bitcoin got people talking
A look at the «Scandals and Controversies» list reveals which topics captured the attention of people in Switzerland in 2017. The Mall of Switzerland, which opened on November 8, saw the largest increase in search queries. A small toy sparked a veritable craze in 2017 and therefore generated a great deal of search interest. The fidget spinner ranks second on the list. It is followed by the cryptocurrency Bitcoin, whose price has risen dramatically this year.
Athletes and presidents are right at the top
Once again this year, Google Switzerland analyzed search queries related to Swiss public figures. In first place is Roger Federer, who won two Grand Slam titles this year and was named Swiss Athlete of the Year for the seventh time. He is followed by Swiss Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan in second place. Stan Wawrinka took third place.
Search queries from Switzerland regarding international figures were also analyzed. The top two spots are held by Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron, two politicians who made headlines in 2017. In addition to politics, however, the Swiss were also interested in music. Third place went to Shirin David, a German singer and blogger, followed by Ed Sheeran.
Zurich, Basel, Bern, and Lots of Questions for Google
In the Swiss Cities and Towns category, Zurich has moved up from third place to first this year. Basel follows in second place. Our capital city also moved up one spot in the rankings this year. Bern has climbed from fourth place last year to third.
More and more often, users are asking Google complete questions instead of typing in a search term. For example, people wanted to know what "Schmand" is, what a mirror and a flag are made of, how a hurricane forms, or how their digital assistant is doing.
