Increase in staff at the trade union secretariat due to No-Billag

Fear that the No-Billag initiative will be approved appears to be causing a rush of calls to the SRG union. The secretariat of the Swiss Union of Media Professionals (SSM) receives several calls every day.

The SSM secretariat has had to increase its staff due to the many inquiries, says Central Secretary Jérome Hayoz in response to an inquiry from Radio Zürisee. Due to the upcoming No-Billag initiative, SRG employees are currently very unsettled, he said. While SRG employees used to come to the SSM with questions about the collective labor agreement, now it is existential concerns.

According to Hayoz, it is difficult to support union members in their concerns because the consequences of adopting the initiative are not yet foreseeable.

The SSM will "do everything in its power to fight No-Billag and for a strong media service public in Switzerland," it says on its website. The SSM represents employees in the electronic media as a union and today has almost 3,500 members with a high degree of organization in the SRG. (pm/hae)
