To the table!

It's actually concerning enough that there's an initiative campaigning for a smartphone-free family dinner table. The San Francisco-based agency Goodby Silverstein supports the cause.

Commonsensemedia.org is campaigning for more family time and "analog" social exchange with #DeviceFreeDinner - and generally offering help with smartphone addiction. For example with Articles like "How can I get my kids to put down their phones? Or with campaigns that show how absurd it is when table neighbors devote themselves to their screens instead of their counterparts. Especially when they are family members who would appreciate the already scarce time they have together.

Would it be time for a similar campaign in Switzerland? Hopefully not. But if you've never annoyed your lunch partner with a furtive glance at your smartphone or an emergency text message, let's cast the first stone. (hae)

At the table

Would you eat straight from the floor if it had been cleaned with a Black and Decker steam broom first?

Incidentally, the experiment in Antwerp involved a floor that is walked on by thousands of people every day. That doesn't necessarily make the idea any more enticing. But the fact that the food was prepared by Belgium's chef of the year Anne-Sophie Breysem does. And if these steam cleaners really do clean so thoroughly, we've probably eaten out of much less appetizing containers. But the exercise was probably not really convenient - even the 99.9 percent removal of bacteria doesn't change that. (hae)
