The World Photography Organization announced Swiss photographer Sabine Cattaneo as the winner of the professional category "Conceptual Photography" at the Sony World Photography Awards 2017, the world's largest photography competition. The judges had the task of selecting the best photo series from ten professional categories submitted by photographers from all over the world. Swiss photographer Sabine Cattaneo did not choose an easy subject for the Sony World Photography Awards. Her picture series "Art. 115" shows a series of places that have to do with the subject of euthanasia and invites the viewer to make up their own mind.

More than 227,000 images from 183 countries were submitted to the Sony World Photography Awards 2017. Sabine Cattaneo was honored for her success at the gala ceremony on April 20, which was attended by international industry experts as well as the winners of all award categories.

Jury member Russ O'Connell, who works as picture editor at the British Sunday Times Magazine, commented on Cattaneo's winning series as follows: "You look at something that was once there or at someone who was once there - at the life of someone who was once there."

When asked about her win, Sabine Cattaneo says: "In view of the sheer number of entrants, it was an extraordinary achievement for me to be shortlisted. But to actually take home the prize is beyond my expectations. It hopefully means more attention for this type of work and of course its main theme. From a personal point of view, it's a reason to keep looking for ways to tackle difficult or sensitive topics in an engaging way."

Sabine Cattaneo's series "Art. 115" is currently on display at Somerset House in London and will be featured in the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards book.
