New technology: SRG and private radio stations cooperate

The private radio stations Radio Südostschweiz, radio 3i+, and Radio Fiume Ticino+ are now broadcasting in higher quality. This is the result of a partnership that each station has entered into individually with the SRG.

SRG created space for three private radio stations in the areas of Italian-speaking Switzerland and Graubünden on its SRG DAB+ layer by reducing the bandwidth of SRG stations. This allows Radio Südostschweiz, radio 3i+ and Radio Fiume Ticino+ to broadcast their programs via DAB+, SRG said Tuesday. Radio Südostschweiz is also broadcasting beyond its current coverage area.

The technical difference between DAB and DAB+ lies in the audio coding used. The two standards use different processes to prepare the data before and after transmission. DAB+ can transmit more programs simultaneously in better quality than DAB and is therefore more efficient.
