When a dog appears, people become human again.
This US election campaign will go down as an inglorious chapter in the history of American democracy. The main protagonists (above all the main protagonist) are leading the way, and their followers are following suit: Emotions instead of arguments, spiteful sentiment instead of discourse.
If each camp is convinced that the other side means the end of the world without discussion, then it's really hopeless.
