SRG and the HCD have thus extended their 60-year partnership by a further five years from 2017 to 2021. Between Christmas and New Year's Day, the Spengler Cup is the focus of ice hockey fans for a week every year thanks to the interruption of the national championship - and the center of SRG's sports coverage. The contract extension enables SRF, RTS, RSI and RTR (TV, radio, online/apps) to continue broadcasting all games of the traditional tournament exclusively and live throughout Switzerland. As host broadcaster, SRG will also produce the Spengler Cup pictures for live broadcasts worldwide.

Roland Mägerle, Head of Business Unit Sport (BUS) SRG, in a statement: "The Spengler Cup is more than just sport. It is a unique combination of ice hockey, entertainment and tradition - and last but not least a television event with charisma far beyond Switzerland. We are very pleased that we will be able to show the public all the games of the tournament live in the coming years as well."

Marc Gianola, President of the Spengler Cup Organizing Committee: "Ever since I can remember, the Spengler Cup matches have been broadcast live on SRG television channels. The quality of the pictures and the coverage have always been of the highest level since the beginning and underline the quality of our tournament. This tradition continues: between Christmas and New Year's Day, the Spengler Cup can still be seen live on SRG. For generations of sports fans, anything else is unthinkable. I am very happy that this will continue."

The parties have agreed not to disclose the contractual details.
