Swiss Media Association to decide on CLA negotiations

At the Swiss Media Congress, the Swiss Media Association will decide whether to negotiate a collective bargaining agreement for media professionals in German-speaking Switzerland. Association members will submit a motion to that effect.

This was written by the Syndicom trade union and the Impressum professional association on Wednesday. A collective labor agreement (CLA) for media professionals would unite the industry in the current transformation phase and strengthen it in many respects, the Syndicom trade union and the Impressum professional association said in a joint statement. Until now, the executive committee, which currently consists of seven publishers, had blocked the start of CLA negotiations for media professionals in German-speaking Switzerland. A proposal drawn up by the journalists' representatives and the managing director of the publishers' association itself was also rejected by the steering committee.

Eleven years without a contract

In German-speaking Switzerland, there has been no contract for eleven years. In French-speaking Switzerland, on the other hand, there is still a collective labor agreement for media professionals. On Wednesday, Syndicom and Impressum appealed to the publishers, the members of the publishers' association, to agree to the commencement of CLA negotiations. The journalists who are members of Syndicom and Impressum are counting on the social partnership spirit of their employers. Every publisher has a responsibility - to its employees and also to the public.

Support from Leuthard

Most recently, even Media Minister Doris Leuthard called on publishers to negotiate a collective labor agreement with the unions in the media industry. The Federal Council does not intervene directly in such matters. "But I would very much like the publishers to be more willing to talk," Leuthard stated in newspaper interviews at the end of April. She hopes that a CLA for media professionals will result in higher journalistic quality. The Swiss Media Congress will take place on Thursday and Friday in Interlaken. The joint advertising and marketing platform ofSRG , Swisscom and Ringier is likely to be the main topic of discussion there. These plans led to a scandal within the publishers' association and Ringier's withdrawal from it. (SDA)
