Last but not least: Playful waiting

Two years ago, two German students came up with an idea for how to make the wait at traffic lights more enjoyable for pedestrians. Now «Street Pong» is becoming a reality. Finally!

Waiting at certain pedestrian crossings at certain rush hours is really annoying. The classic: you press the traffic light button frantically in the hope of speeding up the change to green. In vain. It's not unusual to get the feeling that the traffic lights are switching to an extra red phase as punishment.

It is hardly surprising that Sandro Engel and Amelie Künzler, two students at HAWK Hildesheim University of Applied Sciences and Arts, caused a worldwide sensation with their idea in 2012: they transferred Pong, the mother of all video games, to the traffic light boxes. "Street Pong" was born. The idea was that it would one day be possible to play with people waiting opposite while waiting for the green phase. In Pong, you play a ball back and forth and try to hit it out of bounds on the opponent's side.

What is shown in the movie makes sense across the board - but unfortunately it's just a well-made and fairly real-looking simulation. That's the bad news.

The good news: the two developers spent two years eliminating technical hurdles, clarifying security issues, calculating development costs, looking for partners and founding a company. The result is that "Street Pong" is now a reality. On Tuesday, November 18, 2014, 3 p.m., at the traffic lights in front of the HAWK building Goschentor, the game celebrates its launch according to Communication World premiere. And hopefully conquers the world afterwards. Because the two creative minds deserve it. And more importantly: because people will want to play Pong at traffic lights in the future. (hae)
