Audience Council missed the war in the factory

To mark the outbreak of World War I, SRF is airing a variety of programs throughout the year on life a hundred years ago and the start of the war. The Audience Council reviewed two series and responded to them with mostly positive feedback.

"Anno 1914 - The Factory"

The summer project on the broadcasting slot of "Schweiz aktuell" focused on the historical microcosm of a weaving factory and the owner family's associated villa. Five professional actors and actresses and many so-called experience figures were to bring the time of a hundred years ago to life. The three-week series was entertaining and partly instructive, even if - contrary to the expectations of the audience council - World War I was hardly mentioned. Thanks to a predefined script, the programs developed more excitingly than in previous summer series. On the other hand, the dramaturgy was criticized for the fact that both the professional actors and the characters did not really arrive in 1914 and the gravity of the time was not felt enough. There was unanimous praise for the moderator Michael Weinmann and also the historian Hans-Peter Treichler convinced with his expert knowledge. The audience council also positively mentioned the wealth of information on the website.

"1914: World War I and the Aftermath".

SRF's offerings on World War 1 and its aftermath included numerous radio and television programs and online contributions in 2014. The Audience Council mainly observed the Radio SRF 2 Kultur theme day on June 28, 2014, the reading of Meinrad Inglin's "Schweizerspiegel" and feature films on SRF 1. The Council is impressed by the excellent performance of SRF, namely Radio SRF 2 Kultur, because World War 1 was dealt with broadly and comprehensively with many facets. It was pleasant that not only the men in power and the soldiers in the war were reported, but also what this war meant for women and families. The council members expressed criticism or regret about one point in particular: the broadcasts and also the excellent online information were - in contrast to "Anno 1914 - Die Fabrik" - hardly communicated. It is a pity when such a good public service does not reach the general public.
