Newsnet and Sonntagszeitung launch data blog

On Sunday, Newsnet—comprising the news portals of the *Tages-Anzeiger*, *Bund*, *Basler Zeitung*, and *Berner Zeitung*—launched a new data blog in collaboration with the *Sonntagszeitung*. Its goal is to gain new insights from data.

Numbers and statistics have become the currency of public communication and seem to be everything that humans are not: objective, exact and infallible. "Data, processed into diagrams, interactive graphics or maps, are not only nice to look at, the viewer learns something and, at best, has fun doing it," says data blog project manager Marc Brupbacher in a statement on Monday.

The blog wants to gain new insights from data. "Findings that are perhaps too political for scientists and too sensitive for politicians. We bring these figures to the public in a new form and make them accessible to readers," adds Brupbacher.

The data blog delivers data stories from the subject areas of culture, business, digital, science, society, politics and sports. Journalists from Newsnet and the Sonntagszeitung will contribute visualizations, charts and applications to the blog, sometimes in a playful, sometimes in a classic way. Larger investigations are planned, but also daily topics will be taken up.

The aim is to take a critical look at statistics, uncover cases of data misuse or flawed methodology, and expose those who refuse to provide data. Readers can actively contribute - be it in the form of suggestions for improvement, criticism or topic input.
