Alcohol advertising from February on all stations

The advertising regulations for alcoholic beverages will be relaxed on February 1. The Federal Council decided on Friday to enact the revised Radio and Television Act on that date.

Advertising for light alcoholic beverages is currently prohibited in Switzerland on all SRG stations and in the Swiss advertising windows of foreign television providers, which is contrary to the EU "Television without Frontiers" Directive. Local television stations and private radio stations, however, are allowed to advertise these light alcoholic beverages.
With the Media Agreement, which the Federal Council ratified on Friday, Switzerland can benefit from EU film funding until 2013. With Media, Swiss filmmakers will have easier access to EU training and further education programs and can make use of an international network. The agreement on Swiss participation in Media has been provisionally applied since September 2007. Political and religious advertising as well as commercials for spirits and mixed drinks remain prohibited.
Parliament approved both the liberalization of advertising and participation in the EU film promotion programme Media. The entry into force of the revised Radio and Television Act (RTVA) is subject to the condition that no referendum is launched. The deadline is January 14. Nothing is known about referendums.
