Last but not least: Crossword puzzle masterpiece
The New York Times crossword puzzle from the day of the 1996 presidential election is considered by experts to be the best of all time. It allowed for both possible election winners as answers—cleverly incorporated, of course.
The decisive question 39 horizontally was: "Lead story in tomorrow's newspaper (!)". The fact that both the headline "Bob Dole elected!" and "Clinton elected!" matched may not seem like a masterstroke at first glance. However, the fact that the name of the future president changed six vertical answers in such a way that a different word resulted, but the answers were still correct - not bad. It was developed by mathematics professor Jeremiah Farrell.
Today's New York Times crossword author Will Shortz calls the November 5, 1996 presidential puzzle the best of all time. He will know, after all, he has written over 100 crossword puzzle books and has a collection of 20,000 puzzle books spanning five centuries. (hae)
