Press Council reprimands Blick

According to the Press Council, *Der Blick* violated the journalistic guidelines on the identification of non-public figures. In its report on a court case, the newspaper had published a barely blurred photo of the young defendant.

The editorial team had taken the photo of the 19-year-old from his Facebook profile and covered it only with a narrow black line over his eyes. Together with the personal details mentioned in the text, the accused was "recognizable to a disproportionately large circle of the readership," according to the Press Council. In doing so, Blick had violated the relevant guideline of the "Declaration of the Duties and Rights of Journalists." Even a photo from a social network may not be disseminated by the media unseen.

As the Press Council announced on Tuesday, it approved the complaint of the young man. He had claimed that the publication of the picture was problematic, particularly in view of his rehabilitation.

The report was about a trial at the Zurich District Court last fall. The 19-year-old was sentenced to six years' imprisonment for attempted homicide. In addition, the court ordered a stationary measure. (SDA)
