Corbis takes over Demotix
Following the partnership in 2011, Corbis has now acquired the photo news agency Demotix. The visual media provider intends to expand its global media platform.
The London-based company serves as a source for current news photography. Demotix works with more than 6,500 freelance professional and semi-professional photographers and videographers who deliver up to 50,000 images per month, as Corbis writes in a press release on Thursday. It also has contacts with journalists from all over the world, with networks in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. "Demotix supports the existing supply of news and entertainment imagery that can't be found anywhere else," says Gary Shenk, CEO of Corbis.
According to Corbis, Demotix has received numerous international awards, including the "Media Guardian Innovation Award" for independent media in 2009 and the "Webby" (News) in 2011. The images are used worldwide and have already graced the front pages of the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the Guardian. They have also been used by news stations such as CNN, BBC and NBC.
