Last but not least: rituals around smoking heads and smoke offerings
On September 23, the new—and therefore no less nonsensical—popular initiative «Protection Against Secondhand Smoke» will be put to a vote. As the initiative’s proponents are slowly losing support, they are now also facing opposition based on unexpected arguments.
Smoking rooms, protection against secondhand smoke, health risks, … The arguments for and against the popular initiative are all well known and have long been thoroughly debated. But now, an argument is being unexpectedly revisited by Zigarren Mangeng in Rheineck. The company published an ad in the NZZ today, Wednesday, advocating a «No» vote against the «cigar clause,» using an interesting argument:
«Smoke offerings have always had something sacred, even ritualistic, about them. That will continue to be the case.» That might even be true. According to Wednesday’s *Tagesanzeiger*, a SRG poll found that just 41 percent of voters would vote «yes» on the popular initiative. Should the initiative nevertheless be approved, we’ll likely soon read in the newspapers: “More smoke sacrifices in a Zurich bar—several patrons involuntarily took part in an unauthorized ritual after enjoying a glass of warm milk.” (uma)
