Last but not least: When the Nutella illusion bursts

It's common knowledge that Americans are world champions at filing lawsuits. One mother carried on this tradition by suing the manufacturer of Nutella—and walked away with a multi-million-dollar settlement.

The lady had accused Ferrero USA of advertising the chocolate cream as a "healthy and nutritious breakfast". And this despite the fact that Nutella is probably less healthy than a melted bar of chocolate. A clear case of misleading advertising. And while the woman in this country would at best have been sent a Nutella bath towel as compensation, Ferrero USA has to make payments totaling a good three million dollars to Nutella buyers: Anyone who has bought Nutella in the USA in the past three to four years can claim a payment of up to 20 dollars.

Incidentally, according to the court documents, Ferrero USA has not admitted that its cruelly delicious product is cruelly unhealthy. However, the company has announced that it will "modify certain statements" about Nutella. And if this means that a few fewer mothers believe that Nutella is the basis for their offspring's healthy development, then the whole thing will have been a good thing after all.
