Pulitzer: "Philadelphia Inquirer" honored
The winners of this year's Pulitzer Prizes were announced in New York. In the fiction category, no prize was awarded for the first time in decades.
The jury did not want to award the prize to any of the three candidates in the final round. No reason was given for the decision. The final three candidates were: Denis Johnson, Karen Russel and David Foster Wallace, who died in 2008. As usual, however, there was one award in the drama category: playwright Quiara Alegria Hudes won with her play "Water by the Spoonful".
Of the 14 journalism awards at the Pulitzer Prizes, the "Philadelphia Inquirer" won in the supreme discipline of "public service". The newspaper impressed with its reports on youth violence. The popular online newspaper Huffington Post also received a Pulitzer Prize for the first time. It received the award for a series on the return of wounded American soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan. The prizes were awarded for the 96th time this year. They are the most important media prizes in the USA and are awarded in 21 categories.
