Audience Council: "Club" put under the microscope

The Audience Council of SRG Deutschschweiz reviewed the talk show «Club» and discussed its findings with the program’s producers.

Due to the new moderation and editorial management, the audience council observed the discussion program "Club" on SF 1 and discussed the results with editor-in-chief Diego Yanez and editorial director Karin Frei. All in all, the council members draw a positive balance. They particularly welcome the fact that "Club" is once again more clearly distinguished from "Arena" than in the past and is setting its own accents. This is due not least to the clever selection of topics, which is not primarily oriented to the current events of the day. Most council members appreciate the fact that topics from the area of society are increasingly being discussed.

Young and women in the minority

According to the audience council, the guests on the program are carefully selected. They are competent and can express themselves well and in a differentiated manner. The Council is pleased that, in addition to experts, those directly affected also have their say. However, it is important that all guests can contribute something of substance to the topic. Several council members were disappointed in this respect, particularly with celebrities and politicians. Although the proportion of women among the guests has improved recently, female guests are still in the minority, the audience council notes. Young people and people with a migration background are clearly underrepresented.

Sovereign moderation

The Council is pleased that the majority of discussions in the "Club" are constructive rather than markedly controversial. The program is particularly convincing when it succeeds in revealing background information. The two presenters of the "Club" are well received by the audience council. Both are very well prepared and bring competence and curiosity, as well as a flair for conducting conversations in a confident manner. The council sees room for improvement in the way the discussion begins.

A shorter introduction and not letting guests talk too long in the first round could get the discussion going faster.
