NZZ: Konrad Hummler gives up presidential mandate

Konrad Hummler, the outgoing chairman of the NZZ Board of Directors, is handing over the position on an interim basis to former FDP National Council member Franz Steinegger due to the tax dispute between the United States and Switzerland.

According to Hummler, the legal disputes in the tax dispute between the USA and Switzerland would require the use of all physical and intellectual capacities. In order to gain the necessary leeway for this, he had asked the Board of Directors of the AG für die Neue Zürcher Zeitung to be able to place the office of Chairman in other hands ad interim. The Board of Directors complied with this request and mandated its doyen Franz Steinegger to assume the chairmanship until further notice. His position as a member of the Board of Directors, for which he was elected by the 2011 Annual General Meeting for a four-year term, remains unaffected.

How long the interim solution with former FDP National Councilor Franz Steinegger at the helm will last is open. No time limit has been decided, the NZZ spokeswoman told SDA. Depending on the outcome of the tax dispute with the USA, the situation will be reassessed.

The suspension of Konrad Hummler's presidential mandate at NZZ is directly related to the collapse of Bank Wegelin. Almost two weeks ago, the bank sold its entire business, with the exception of customer relations with US Americans, to Raiffeisen Bank. The US authorities have brought charges against Bank Wegelin for aiding and abetting tax evasion. Konrad Hummler is a managing partner of the bank.
