Wall Street Journal launches German offshoot

The market for current German business media has gained a new publication. On Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) launched its German edition—though only online and not as a traditional newspaper.

The editors promised their readers "International business news in German. Only online, never at the newsstand". The makers of the German Wall Street Journal sit with their colleagues at the Dow Jones business service in Frankfurt. Both belong to Rupert Murdoch's NewsCorp. The new editorial team is headed by Knut Engelmann, who was once global head of news at the Reuters business agency.

Engelmann was combative at the start. In a welcome note, he announced that he would provide his readers with "the latest and most exclusive news and background reports from around the world every day". With the "largest international business newspaper behind him", his editorial team will succeed.

Engelmann also referred to the WSJ network of "over 2000 correspondents worldwide". The WSJ produces a European edition in London, for example. (SDA)
