Radio silence at the Basler Zeitung
Following the departure of Moritz Suter, who sold his shares to Rahel Blocher, there is radio silence at the Basler Zeitung: neither the company nor the editorial team are commenting. Suter's successor is to be officially announced on Thursday.
On its own behalf, the Baz remains true to itself and extremely taciturn: Suter's capitulation is worth 13 lines on the Tuesday front page to editor-in-chief Markus Somm. Online, the Baz remained completely silent, while partner portals of Newsnet reported.
Somm announces in the newspaper that Suter's successor will be announced by Thursday at the latest. A company spokeswoman held out the prospect of a media conference on that date; there would be no information before then. However, there seems to be a need for information, as was reported at some newsstands in Basel, where the NZZ and Tages-Anzeiger were sold out on Tuesday.
No information before Federal Council elections
Christoph Blocher - business partner of his daughter Rahel - did not comment on the Basler Zeitung newspaper to the SDA news agency on Tuesday. The SVP National Councillor said on the fringes of the session in Bern that there would be no information on this before the Federal Council elections, i.e. on Thursday at the earliest. Blocher also did not want to comment on the rumor that FDP National Councillor Filippo Leutenegger would become the new Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Baz. As long as the future publisher of the Baz is not known, the editorial team does not want to comment either: There are still too few facts on the table to do so, said a spokesperson for the editorial commission.
Meanwhile, the protest movement "Save Basel" with writer Guy Krneta, which was founded in 2010 after the appointment of Blocher biographer Somm as editor-in-chief, is calling for a rally on Saturday. By Tuesday, their online appeal against Somm and for an independent Baz had received more than 19'000 Persons signed. (SDA)
