Egypt: Reporters Without Borders warns female journalists against deployment

Following sexual assaults on several female journalists, the organization Reporters Without Borders has called on media organizations not to send women to Egypt to cover the news at this time.

So far, the last victim has been a French journalist. She was attacked by men in civilian clothes while working in Cairo on Thursday. There is no other solution than to refrain from sending female journalists to Egypt, explained Reporters Without Borders in Paris, according to SDA.

The Egyptian-American journalist Mona al-Tahawy was also beaten and sexually abused by the police in Cairo, according to her own account. As she reported via the short message service Twitter, members of the police force arrested her during a protest near Tahrir Square on Thursday night. She was locked up for around twelve hours. Her left arm and right hand were broken during the abuse. "God knows what would have happened if I hadn't had dual citizenship," Al-Tahawy wrote. A member of the military police later apologized for the police's behaviour.
