BBC cuts 650 jobs in foreign program

In response to the British government's extensive cost-cutting plans, the public broadcaster BBC is cutting 650 jobs in its foreign program.

The job cuts over three years would save 46 million pounds (around 69 million Swiss francs), the BBC said according to SDA. With this measure, the BBC is preparing for the loss of funding from the British Foreign Office, said the Director of World News, Peter Horrocks. In future, the program will be financed by the licence fee. This is a painful day for BBC World Service, he explained.

The broadcaster was founded in 1932, costs 272 million pounds a year and reaches 180 million people worldwide via radio, television and the internet. Of the programs in 32 languages, Macedonian, Serbian and Albanian are being discontinued.
