Ringier earns money with television

This year, Ringier's TV division will post a profit.

This year, the operating result of Ringier's TV division will be in the black, which is also budgeted for next year, with sales increasing by around 10 percent. However, Ringier does not operate its own channel, but produces a program window on Sat 1 and programs on SF 2 as part of Press TV (PTV). According to Hans Jürg Deutsch, Head of TV at Ringier, this year's operating result for all TV activities amounts to CHF 36 million. This does not include "legacy costs" for football broadcasting rights, which are still being incurred despite the end of "Täglich ran".
For next year, Ringier is budgeting for a turnover of CHF 40 million and a return to the black. The 10 percent increase in revenue is the result of additional activities: the broadcasting of parts of the World Cup, the cooking quiz "Al dente", expanded media training and one or two new productions on Sat 1.
According to Deutsch, the income is made up of a small amount of advertising revenue, spot and broadcast production for third parties, a contribution of four million francs from the PTV fund and, above all, sponsorship. "Without sponsorship, the whole thing would not be possible," he says. "Movieclub", for example, would not exist without sponsorship, and "1x täglich" could not be financed by advertising alone. Ringier's share of the PTV fund comes from the SRG. The latter compensates publisher television with an annual advertising and production fee of CHF 11.5 million. Deutsch's current TV balance sheet: "It's nothing exciting, but it's fun." Markus Knöpfli
