Angela Sgura has always had a flair for numbers. Nevertheless, she puts a spoke in the wheel of outdated prejudices against financial people. The attractive woman from Basel embodies the exact opposite of a colorless and screwed-up number cruncher. She takes it in stride that business partners often react to her with surprise. "I'm still taken seriously," the 35-year-old is convinced. "You have to know what you want and act accordingly."
So far, the RingierTV Head of Finance and new Co-Managing Director of Sat 1 Switzerland has left little to chance: Even as a student of economics at the University of St.Gallen, she set herself the goal of occupying a management position one day. It wasn't a hunger for power, but the opportunity to work strategically, make decisions and take on responsibility that was at the forefront of her mind.
With her degree in hand, Sgura joined KPMG as an audit assistant, where she was promoted to audit manager. At the same time, she embarked on a three-year training program to become a certified public accountant on the side. A double burden that took its toll on her: "The balancing act could have passed for an extreme sport," she recalls.
But the effort paid off: at the age of 29, she was awarded a diploma and became deputy managing director at HMO Gesundheitsplan. "That was a bit of a leap into the deep end," Sgura says in retrospect. Nothing seems to faze her that quickly, however. "Recognizing connections is the be-all and end-all for me. But you also have to give yourself some time to do that."
Sgura took the same approach a year ago when she took on the job as head of finance at RingierTV. The change also allowed her to combine her know-how with private interests - after all, in addition to sports, theater and friends, film and television are also on Sgura's leisure schedule.
Sgura sees the fact that she has now also taken over the management of Sat 1 Switzerland together with Christian Gartmann as a further development of her previous activities: "I got to know the financial management and the team well over the course of the year." She says her focus will continue to be on finances, while Gartmann will increasingly look after marketing. What's really new for Sgura is the shared responsibility for the program. And the young management team wants to whip that into shape: "The goal is to maintain market share with interesting programming and good in-house productions."
