Last but not least: The black sheep among advertising slogans
Zurich's major labor unions are questioning their cooperation with the May 1 Committee. The reason: a poster put out by the committee.
With this year's slogan "Let's lose our temper", the committee is playing with fire. According to a statement from the trade unions on Friday, this only suits the political opponents of May Day. According to the major Zurich trade unions Unia, VPOD, Kommunikation and Comedia, they will only work with organizations that explicitly distance themselves from violence. They expect the same from the May Day Committee. Ambiguities in the face of such riots are not acceptable, according to the statement. Employees and their families have a right to express their concerns in Zurich "without disturbing background noise". Remo Schädler from Unia told the news agency SDA when asked about the organization of future Labour Days. We will certainly no longer work with organizations that do not clearly and explicitly distance themselves from violence. This distance must also be expressed in a slogan. It is not acceptable to have to think and squirm in order to interpret it. But the real reason for distancing themselves from the May Day committee is that the trade unions and organizers could now be associated with violent riots. According to Schädler, the unions and organizers have so far managed to avoid being associated with the violent riots. This has been called into question with this year's committee slogan.
May Day 2010 is about protesting against the increasing injustice in society, as the trade unions write: A small caste of rip-off artists is snatching ever larger portions of the wealth they have earned, while a large majority of the population sees itself cheated out of the fruits of its labor. Social security is also being dismantled.
