Holcim (Switzerland) and the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation (SIHF) are entering into a multi-year partnership. With Holcim Swiss Ice Hockey as its new referee partner, the construction company will be featured on the helmets of the approximately 1,900 licensed referees.

Circular Construction as a Common Denominator

The collaboration focuses on raising awareness of circular construction in Switzerland. The motto «Go Circular» represents the shift toward a circular model in which construction and demolition materials are recycled into new building solutions. This reduces the use of primary raw materials and alleviates the burden on landfills. The goal is to consistently close material loops, create something new from the old, and build new cities from existing ones. According to the press release, accelerating this transition requires advanced building solutions that go beyond traditional core building materials such as cement, concrete, and aggregates. Innovative circular products and energy-efficient building systems put the «Go Circular» principle into practice.

Making Precise Decisions Under Pressure

In both ice hockey and circular construction, challenging situations call for precise and well-informed decisions. The new partnership brings «Go Circular» to the ice and underscores its connection to Swiss sports.

Martin Baumann, CEO of the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation, says: «We are very pleased to have Holcim—a strong company with deep roots in Switzerland—as our new partner. The referees are a central part of our sport, and their decisions ensure fairness and orderly gameplay. The new helmet branding creates a visible presence and connects two partners who stand for precision, responsibility, and forward-thinking action.»

Holcim Puts «Go Circular» into Practice»

«A referee makes many individual decisions, but must always keep the entire game in view. After all, a single whistle can influence the entire course of the game,» explains Marco Maccarelli, CEO of Holcim Switzerland. «It’s similar in the construction industry—only our game is called »Go Circular.’ Whether a building is truly circular in the end depends on those many individual decisions. Anyone making decisions must see the big picture. Every decision shapes the game and determines whether the cycle ultimately closes.”

The campaign links the core values of refereeing—standards, safety, integrity, and performance—with Holcim’s approach to circular construction. The goal is to set standards, prioritize safety, act with integrity, and deliver high-performance solutions.

Under the theme «The Power of Good Decisions,» the initiative demonstrates that, just as a referee’s authority ensures a fair game, Holcim sets the standards for sustainable construction, in which material and design decisions must be made correctly from the very beginning, according to the press release.

Holcim (Switzerland) produces concrete, gravel, and cement at nearly 60 locations throughout Switzerland and recycles building materials from demolition projects into products that conserve resources. The company has set a goal of producing low-carbon and fully recyclable building materials by 2050. Holcim Switzerland is a subsidiary of the global company Holcim Ltd and employs approximately 1,500 people at three cement plants, 16 gravel plants, 36 concrete plants, and several recycling centers.
