Digital Violence Against Children: ECPAAT Launches Awareness Campaign

Digital violence is on the rise: ECPAAT launches a new campaign to warn of the risks children and adolescents face online. Prevention, support, and clear demands are intended to protect those affected.

ECPAT launches an awareness campaign against sexualized violence online. Every year, the BKA registers tens of thousands of cases - many of which remain undetected. Children and young people are particularly affected, as almost 60 percent regularly surf alone. Cybergrooming, sextortion and the sending of dickpics are among the biggest risks for young users. Many of them are not even aware that such incidents are punishable by law. The campaign was created together with young people to provide authentic answers to the most important questions: How can I recognize criminal offences? Where can I get help? Concise content appears on TikTok, Instagram and a dedicated landing page. Parents also benefit from targeted online courses in the ECPAT Academy. This will be accompanied by a parliamentary breakfast and a symposium in Berlin to drive forward political solutions. The demands are clear: platforms should be designed to be age-appropriate and safe, with stricter contact rules, mandatory prevention and rapid disclosure to authorities. ECPAT rejects a general ban on use - because risks do not simply disappear with age. The interaction between politics, society and technology remains crucial. This is the only way to create a digital space that truly protects children.
