International audience favorite James McAvoy, known from films such as "Speak No Evil", "Atonement", "X-Men" and "Split", dares to step behind the camera. In his directorial debut "California Schemin'", he tells the incredible true story of the Scottish rap duo Silibil N' Brains, who posed as Californian hip-hop sensations in the early 2000s in order to make their breakthrough. With fake biographies, American accents and unbridled ambition, they scammed themselves a record deal in London and even opened for Eminem - until their facade collapsed. McAvoy brings this story of longing, self-delusion and musical energy to the screen while also taking on a role in the movie.

The musical film based on a true story will be presented at the Award Night at Zurich Opera House. McAvoy will also give insights into his work in a ZFF Masters.

James McAvoy will present the European premiere of his directorial debut as the star guest of the Award Night at Zurich Opera House on October 4. The closing film will be shown after the awards ceremony, where the winners of the feature film and documentary film competitions will be announced.

"California Schemin is a very entertaining music film based on true events that provides a glimpse behind the scenes of show business and shows how thin the line is between reality and appearance," says Christian Jungen, Festival Director of the ZFF. "We are delighted that James McAvoy has decided to celebrate the European premiere in Zurich."

The 21st edition of the Zurich Film Festival will take place from September 25 to October 5, 2025.
