Protest against program cuts: specialist journalism in danger?

PVbB and Impressum support the protests against the planned program cuts at SRF. Science and culture journalism are particularly at risk.

The Press Association of both Basel (PVbB) and impressum are backing the demands for SRF/SRG to maintain its basic media offering. Scientific and cultural journalism play an essential role in the public service, the reduction of which would have far-reaching consequences. With this in mind, impressum is informing its members and the public about the rally on February 22, 2025 at 2 p.m. on Meret Oppenheim-Platz in front of the SRF studio in Basel.

In addition, impressum is drawing attention to various petitions campaigning for the preservation of these journalistic formats. As a cultural broadcaster, SRF 2 in particular would be severely affected by the cost-cutting measures.

Impressum emphasizes that journalism remains the central mission of the public media service. Especially in the areas of science and culture, there are hardly any private media providers that could fill this gap. A reduction would jeopardize the population's constitutional right to well-founded information.

The rally and the open letter were launched by the group "Against the reduction of basic media offerings into a snack buffet". The petition for the preservation of science journalism comes from a group of concerned scientists at Swiss universities.
